Taiwan lacks funds to protect fisherman

It is reported that the total fuel expenses for the drill and the increased number of coast guard vessels following tensions with the Philippines, cost over NT$5 million (US$167,000). The defense budget currently allocates NT$10 billion (US$334 million) annually on fuel and only NT$500 million (US$17 million) towards coast guards. Naval sources said that the budget is lacking and not enough to send regular patrols out to protect its fishermen.
